HIV Continues to Replicate Despite Antiretrovirals
From Northwestern Univ:
A new study demonstrates that HIV continues to replicate, even when it is no longer detectable in blood. The findings provide a new perspective on how HIV persists despite potent antiretroviral therapy by growing in lymphoid tissue, creating a viral reservoir. The study, led by a team from Northwestern Univ, also explains why the development of drug resistance is not inevitable -- the virus migrates to areas where the drug concentrations are low and does not necessarily develop resistance. The results provide increased importance on the ability to deliver high concentrations of antiretroviral drugs to all locations in the body where HIV can grow.
